Mumbaikars often beg for an escape from the busy city and those those seeking a weekend retreat can now head to the shores of Goa where the majestic Aguad Port & Jail Complex is currently home to a series of enchanting Candlelight concerts. Situated on the rocky coastline of Sinquerim, the 17th-century military fort now shimmers with the soft light of thousands of candles, providing a stunning backdrop for classical tributes to global icons, including Queen and Coldplay as well as the heart-stirring compositions of A. R. Rahman.

From Mumbai to Aguad: A Journey into History and Culture
The Aguad Port and Jail Complex is far more than just a performance space. The restored complex, perched with panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, was historically known as ‘La Fortaleza Real de Aguad’ during the Portuguese era. It stands both as a symbol of anticolonial movements and resilience, comprising Asia’s oldest lighthouse, an ancient gunpowder magazine, and the largest Portuguese port that was once used for trade with Lisbon. In the 20th century, its cold bastions housed freedom fighters, guarding narratives of courage and perseverance.
Today, this storied venue has shed its austere past to embrace art, transforming into one of Goa’s premier cultural hotspots. The open-air courtyards and weathered stone provide an evocative setting for the newly-announced Candlelight tributes.
Candlelight at Aguad Port & Jail Complex
As the Goan sun dips below the horizon, magical Candlelight concerts bring the historic venue to life. These intimate piano performances offer a fresh take on classic tunes like the soaring notes of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” or the inspiring piano melody of Coldplay’s “Clocks”. Skilled musicians will be surrounded by countless candles that sway to these familiar melodies and more.
Performances are typically held in the evening hours—either at 18:30 or 20:30—with entry beginning half an hour before the show starts. Guests must be aged eight or older and anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
If you’re planning your Mumbai-to-Goa getaway, make sure to arrive early. Give yourself the time to explore this historic marvel and then lose yourself in the glowing warmth of the Candlelight atmosphere!
