While light pollution grips the city of Mumbai, a few kilometres away lies a green oasis that lights up on late summer nights. As the pre-monsoon season edges from mid-May to mid-June, thousands of fireflies in the Western Ghats mate. The results? A sea of twinkling stars in the lush darkness of the forests for just a few weeks before the heavy rains arrive. Taking place during their prime mating season, the Maharastrian countryside is perfect to experience the magical phenomenon, locally known as the Kajwa Mahostav or the Firefly Festival 2026.
There are many treks and overnight camps organised during this time. Treks and Trails, Firefly Festival camping, and Mischief Treks are among a few agencies offering a stunning camping experience. Remember to cover up, wear hiking shoes, and carry bug repellant spray.
