A pause in Mumbai is perhaps as rare as planting a new tree in the concrete jungle. However, certain spaces continue to hold a mirror to their cinematic past and slow ideology. High above the usual noise of South Mumbai lies a peculiar park filled with lush greenery, sweeping views of the Arabian Sea, and quirky architecture. For generations, residents have taken their daily walks, and kids have enjoyed their childhood rite of passage. Just off B.G. Kher Road lies the familiar pathways of Kamala Nehru Park.
Kamala Nehru Park
Located opposite the famous Hanging Gardens, Kamala Nehru Park reminisces about an era from 1952. Established as an honour to the late wife of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the park is built atop a water reservoir and covers an area of four acres. The giant iron gates welcome you in with views of adorable ponds covered with floating lotus leaves. The trails inside the sprawling lawns welcome many regulars to pause, breathe fresher air, and take in the vivid colours of nature. You will find old friends pausing to catch up, young couples chatting away, evening joggers taking their routine laps, and children swinging away. However, the real attraction is the vantage walkways that offer views of the sprawling city skyline. Sunsets here serve a meditative respite, especially when the orange glow of the setting sun illuminates the curved coastal stretch of Queen’s Necklace.
The old woman’s shoe
Beside the seaside backdrop, the park is home to one of the most iconic shoe that remains a permanent fixture of local nostalgia. The massive boot painted bright blue with a thatched red roof stems from a nursery rhyme based on the old woman who lived in a shoe. Even in 2026, the modest structure continues to fill the younguns’ minds with whimsy. Moreover, children below 12 years can climb inside this fairy tale house and gaze out of its cosy little balcony. Additionally, gazebos with decorated green creepers and vintage-style benches under high tree canopies make for lovely golden hour photos.
The best part? Access to the park is completely free. And, the gates are open to the public daily from 9 AM to 7:30 PM.
