February 28, 2025, will witness a rare celestial event where all seven planets will align across the dark sky. The planetary parade which began this January is said to reach its peak by the end of this month with Mercury joining the ongoing parade clustered so far by only six planets. An exceptional event not to be repeated until 2040, it calls for astronomy enthusiasts all across the country for a chance to catch the spectacular view.
What is a planetary parade?
A planetary parade occurs when multiple planets align along the ecliptic plane. Despite smaller alignments being frequent, the act of all seven planets coming together marks a rare once-in-a-lifetime event that should be witnessed.
How and when to observe the planetary parade?
The best time to catch the alignment would ideally be 45 minutes past sunset. Though some planets, due to their natural brightness, would be easier to spot through the naked eye, some would require ocular assistance.
It is advised to set camp at a dark location with minimal light pollution to increase the probability of a clear view of the planetary parade. If you can, we also recommend opting for binoculars and/or telescopes to make sure you do not miss this beautiful cosmic occasion (yes, we are keeping our fingers crossed for a clear sky)!
Where to observe the planetary parade?
As mentioned, a dark location is required to make sure you catch the event in its entirety. Though in a city like Mumbai, it can be difficult to find a space like that, these stargazing locations not too far from the city can be your base to observe this one-of-a-kind affair. Further, you may also opt for an overnight camp at these gorgeous locations near Mumbai or given it is the weekend, drive further to these fantastic getaway options and make a tiny trip out of it!
