Happy New Year, Mumbai! Soon, 2025 is going to be a thing of the past, and a brand new chapter shall open with 2026. As you and we gear up to say goodbye to this bittersweet year in the grandest way possible, things may not go as planned. With an overwhelming crowd packing the roads and heavy traffic foiling your travel plans, a New Year in Mumbai may look a bit intimidating. However, there is nothing that proper planning and the right itinerary won’t solve. Here are the official public transport hours in Mumbai for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to plan your day right.
Public Transport Timings in Mumbai on New Year’s Eve and New Year

Mumbai Local Trains
Ahead of New Year’s Eve, Central Railway has designated four special suburban train services. The trains will run until 3:00 AM. The Central line train will leave Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at 1:30 AM and arrive at Kalyan at 3:00 AM. Reversely, the train will leave Kalyan at 1:30 AM and reach CSMT at 3:00 AM. The Harbour Line train will operate between CSMT and Panvel, departing at 1:30 AM and reaching at 3:00 AM.
On Western Railways, there are eight designated special trains post midnight between Churchgate and Virar. The available trains from Churchgate start at 1:15 AM, 2:00 AM, 2:30 AM, and 3:25 AM. Reversely from Virar, the trains will leave at 12:15 AM, 12:45 AM, 1:40 AM, and 3:05 AM.
Keep in mind that the local trains will be packed with people; thus, keep a check on the schedule and arrive at the platform on time. The trains will run as usual through the day with reduced frequency after midnight.
BEST Buses
Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport has also announced additional bus services across key routes on New Year’s Eve. Beyond the regular timings and bus services, the extras will be aimed at curbing crowds at tourist destinations such as the Gateway of India, Juhu Chowpatty, Gorai Creek, and Marve Chowpatty.
Bus No. C-86, 203, and 231 will run on regular routes in addition to air-conditioned routes No. A-21, A-112, A-116, A-247, A-272, and A-294. These special buses will operate between 10:00 PM and 12:30 PM.
Heritage tour buses will also be available. They will start from 5:30 AM on December 31st and continue till the early hours of January 1st, depending on passenger demand.
Mumbai Metro
Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation has also announced special overnight services, especially for Aqua Line-3. Metro Aqua Line-3, running from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR station, sees a heavy footfall of tourists and celebrators alike. The metro will be operating from 10:30 PM on December 31 and continue until 5:55 AM on January 1.
Regular services will resume 5:55 AM onwards, as usual.
Public Transport on New Year’s Day, January 1 2026
Unlike the US, January 1st is a restricted holiday, which means that it is not a public holiday. With many government offices and banks being fully functional, public transport will resume its usual operations on Thursday, January 1, 2026.
Taxis and Autos
While there will be taxis and autos ready on the roadside to take you home, beware of hefty surge prices and extreme traffic. Thus, we recommend making full use of special public transport to avoid traffic congestion, overcrowded and naturally affordable travel across the city for New Year’s celebrations.
Pro-tip: We recommend not taking your own vehicles unless you want to be stuck in traffic for hours and perhaps enjoy a glass of beer or two.
Finally, special police teams will be deployed at popular hotspots like Juhu, Versova, Bandra Bandstand, Worli Sea Face, Marine Drive, and Gorai Beach.
Happy New Year and safe travels!
