India’s breathtaking architecture is getting some well-deserved global attention and we’re here for it! Luxury travel magazine Condé Nast Traveller released their list of 71 Beautiful Streets Around The World. India made the cut with a heritage lane located in every Mumbaikar’s favourite holiday destination – Goa.
One of the world’s most beautiful streets is in Goa
Panjim, the Goan capital, is peppered with colonial Portuguese influences, from neo-Gothic churches to vivid Indo-Portuguese bungalows. However, it is Fontainhas, Panjim’s heritage Latin Quarter that’s specifically voted as one of the world’s most beautiful streets.
“Fontainhas, the Latin Quarter of Panji, India, showcases the influence of Portuguese colonisers on the area. Brightly-coloured Portuguese-style houses sit along the cobblestone streets, and many showcase blue-and-white-tile street markers,’ describes the Conde Nast Traveller article.
In fact, this historic section of Panjim is so stunningly breathtaking that it was recognised as a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1984. A winding main street flanked by old European-style villas with traditional Goan porches called balcãos and colourful tiled roofs and walls makes Fontainhas Latin Quarter a sight to behold. Conde Nast Traveller has rightly declared this as one of the “spectacular streets worth travelling to see.”
Luckily for Mumbaikars, travelling to Goa to witness this boulevard full of history in person is easier than it is for the rest of the world! The coastal state is after all one of the most iconic road trip destinations from Mumbai. If a 12-hour drive isn’t your cup of tea, then there’s always the option of a quick one-hour flight from Mumbai to Goa that’s ideal for a quick weekend trip.
