The Christmas season is upon us. Across Mumbai, lights have started twinkling in cafes, churches are dressed in the brightest baubles, and the air carries a faint smell of winter. As evenings draw close to Christmas, churches across the city open their doors. In each, slowly and rhythmically, the tunes of Christmas carols rise in sacred harmony.
This festive season, two of Mumbai’s historic churches open their arches to the Wild Voices Choir. On December 20th and December 24th, the group will be performing a Christmas carol concert at St Thomas Cathedral in Fort and the Afghan Church in Colaba, respectively. Soon, these historic landmarks will turn into living stages of music, memories and tradition.
Christmas Carols Concert by Wild Voices Choir
Carrying forward a 23-year-old carol tradition, Wild Voices Choir is a multi-generational community of singers brought together by their shared love for music. With a strong sense of community and harmony, the choir does its job of stirring souls with utmost sincerity. Through the years, the group has carefully blended traditional Christian customs with an unmistakable Indian soul. Christmas carols have been explored, renditioned, and reimagined to flow gently over patient crowds.
Moreover, the group went viral last year with their Christmas carol rendition of the Indian National Anthem. Under the holy cross, as the group sang their 4-part harmony of the national anthem, waves of patriotic emotions flew through social media. This year, the choir has returned with a promise to remain true to the Christmas spirit. At St Thomas Cathedral, audiences can expect a glorious evening of Christmas carols with surprising renditions woven into traditional familiarity.
If you happen to miss their performance in Fort, the choir will be back on Christmas Eve at the Afghan Church in Colaba. The concert is set to take place during candlelight service, transforming the 165-year-old Gothic space into something intimate and transcendent. Remember, these performances are not part of a mass but a musical experience, soulful and inviting.
Consider it a gift of Christmas. These events are open to all and free of cost.
