Greenery in Mumbai is a rare sight. In this urban jungle, our eyes constantly crave a bit of green and city residents often resort to finding solace in plants tucked inside their homes. Bringing nature home is perhaps the new normal, but plant prices are not spared from inflation either. If you are looking to add a bit of green to your home, a spectacular initiative is unfolding in Ghatkopar. Celebrating the Forest Festival or Van Mahotsav 2026, a rare and free giveaway of 25,000 plants is happening on 29th and 30th July 2026. Here’s everything you need to know.
Free plant giveaway, Ghatkopar
Spearheaded by local Municipal Corporation leader Rakhee Jadhav, the annual free giveaway of plants is back. This ambitious campaign encourages Mumbaikars to actively participate in building a greener, cooler, and healthier city by bringing nature directly into their homes and housing societies. Nevertheless, the drive itself is a part of much larger legacy of Van Mahotsav. Launched in 1950, the nationwide movement, celebrated traditionally in July to align with monsoon rains, raises awareness on deforestation and brings the responsibility of environmental protection to everyday citizens. Furthermore, this year as well, the Van Mahotsav celebrations in Ghatkopar East feature a grand plant exhibition and a massive free sapling distribution drive. Registered participants can take home flower plants, medicinal herbs, fruit trees, and decorative bonsais. Additionally, visitors can explore gardening supplies and participate in eco-friendly activities and stage performances.
How to get your free plant?
The initiative has started in full swing with registrations officially open from July 20 to July 28, 2028. It’s important to note that unlike most giveaways, this one has to be done completely offline at General Arun Kumar Vaidya Maidan in Ghatkopar East. All you have to bring for a successful registration is an Aadhaar card. No other ID shall be accepted. To claim your green companions, you must visit the venue between 10 AM and 10 PM. Additionally, each participant shall receive 1 indoor and 1 outdoor plant. Housing representatives can register their societies and take up to six plants. The free plant giveaway distribution is set to happen on July 29 and July 30.
