Mumbai’s cafe scene is always evolving with unique treats, experimental menus, and comforting service. Nestled in the timeless charm of Bandra lies the once heritage bungalow, The Newton House. Today, it is home to a contemporary Japanese-inspired experimental cafe, Mokai Cafe. While the usual designer interiors breathe sophisticated aesthetics of Japanese minimalism, Christmas has come to Mokai Cafe with a bold artistic flair.
Christmas at Mokai Cafe, Bandra
In November, the Harajuku-style facade of Mokai Cafe took a maximalist turn. Larger-than-life teddy bears hang from the ceiling amidst the glowing red, gold, and green baubles. In fact, there is a teddy bear (and plushie pandas) at every corner, plush, soft, welcoming, colourful, hanging by the windows, welcoming you at the door, and sitting by your dinner table. The magnificent golden bow makes you feel like Thumbelina entering a carefully wrapped gift box. A true whimsy of Christmas itself!
The twinkling lights guide you through the 20-30 minutes wait that is seemingly normal at Mokai Cafe. Yet, once the wait is over, you are presented with a chaotic and hospitable charm alongside a ‘Coffee To Go’ counter.
Everything You Need to Try At Mokai Cafe
The true spotlight of the cafe’s Christmas menu falls on their coffee and desserts. No Christmas is truly complete without a glass of thick and steaming hot chocolate. In collaboration with Le Pure Chocolatier, the 55% Valrhona hot chocolate comes with a hazelnut or pistachio-flavoured Dubai chocolate bar. The most loved from Mokai Cafe’s menu has to be their Tiramisu latte topped with a creamy and perfectly cut piece of Tiramisu. With double-shot espresso, the variations of this drink are endless. A strawberry Hokkaido cream tiramisu latte is topped with bright red strawberries, while the viral Milo tiramisu latte takes the barley flavours of Singaporean Milo into the creaminess of the famed Italian dessert.
Their extensive Asian menu features fan favourites like Okonomiyaki, Singaporean kaya butter toast, and Bang Bang prawns. Nevertheless, the Christmas sando at Mokai Cafe is certainly the highlight of the season. It comes stacked with in-house smoked duck with festive cranberry sauce and olive oil focaccia. The exciting part is that each of their ingredient is locally sourced from around the world, and each taste is truly seasonal, like the Gula Melaka jaggery from Malaysia or boba from Taiwan.
Moreover, Mokai Cafe takes pride in its inclusive menu with options that are vegan, gluten-free, and keto-friendly, so one can indulge in their delights guilt-free. They also have a special breakfast menu starting at 8 AM.
