After a decade-long suspension, the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has finally made plans to relaunch its seaplane tourism services. With tenders floated to bidders in India and abroad, this project aims to boost tourism across the state. Now, urban cities like Mumbai and Pune can be easily connected to remote yet picturesque destinations otherwise difficult to reach. Expect less travel time and gorgeous scenic views of Maharashtra’s breathtaking natural beauty!
What are the routes proposed by the MTDC for seaplane tourism?
The seaplane is proposed to connect major cities like Mumbai and Pune to destinations like Ganpatipule in Ratnagiri, Koyna Dam in Satara, Ujani Dam in Solapur, and Mandwa in Alibaug. Further plans shall be unveiled as the project reaches its maturity.
As the project was once proposed to launch in 2014 but could not due to approval delays and legal complications, the MTDC will be taking a more strategic approach this time. “We are opting for routes that offer better chances of success by utilising existing helipads and certified waterbodies. There is also close coordination with aviation authorities to streamline approvals,” stated an MTDC official.
What do we know so far?
With reduced travel time and a scenic journey in tow, the modern seaplanes will have capacities for seating up to 19 passengers and will be functional on both land and water. The aerial view includes the pristine coasts of the state, heritage forts, forested hills, and some of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites. The government will be further offering aerial tours that highlight Maharashtra’s rich cultural landscape. The project’s mission statement has emphasised the improvement of the tourism sector in the state, hoping that the proposal will attract both domestic and international travellers.
