Narnia and Middle Earth, India sees your magical fairytale forests and raises you a mystical glowing woodland tucked away in the mysterious altitudes of the Western Ghats. The breathtaking natural phenomenon of bioluminescence turns the flora and fauna of the Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary a radiant shade of neon green at night, from July to October. Hang on to your hats, guys, because it’s located in a place Mumbaikars frequently roadtrip– Goa! And here you were thinking all that glows in Goa are just sparkling waters of pristine beaches and the fluorescent glow sticks of clubs.
Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary – Goa’s Best Kept Secret

Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary and its dense forests emit an eerie glow at night that sends all of those modern distractions packing. The wizards who cast this nocturnal spell on the forest are the humble bioluminescent mushrooms, specifically the Mycena Genus Fungi. Resembling ghostly lanterns, these fungi feed on decaying tree bark, and dense undergrowth thrives on monsoon humidity. You’ll also find phospherent trails on the forest floor left by creepy-crawlies like snails who’ve touched the fungus.

Additionally, incandescent creatures like glowworms and fireflies join the glow up, creating an otherworldly ambience. Part of Goa’s protected Mollen National Park, Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary is a highly protected evergreen jungle under Goa Tourism. Over 722 species of flowering plants, 128 species of birds have put down their roots and nests in this wildlife sanctuary. A variety of animals, including spotted deer and big cats like panthers, prowl its luminous paths. I did say it’s a fairytale forest.
What else can you do?

Putting storybook animals aside, there’s enough to do and see here to leave your head spinning. The Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary is also home to the gushing Dudhsagar and Tambdi waterfalls, the mythical Devil’s Canyon, and the Tambdi Surla Shiv Temple, to name a few. Private vehicles are allowed into the park for a way; after that, you’ll have to hike on foot.
Luckily, nature experience curators Heart and Soil are organising a trek to Bhagwan Mahavir National Park from August 28 to September 25 for Bombayites that covers all its attractions. Expert naturalists will help you explore the glowing nightlife, followed by daytime nature walks to birdwatch and sight fluttering butterflies. The itinerary lets you take a swing at farm life by milking cows and cooking local food with villagers. You’ll also amble through ancient temples on guided tours, and sleep in beautiful air-conditioned cottages.
