Walking down the Versova Metro Station towards Andheri West’s Kabra Metro exit, the footpath turns into a parade of restaurants. The tables spill over to the pavement, umbrellas pitched low, and conversations float into traffic noise. At one such, fairy lights hang like garlands and shrubs shield a cosy corner. A glowing sign hangs by the side that reads, Lygon St, a restaurant inspired by Melbourne‘s iconic Italian neighbourhood.
Lygon St – The City’s Newest Italian Dining
Lygon St feels like a place that invites you to sit by a cosy corner, music fading into the background as soft conversations and laughs float in the air. The street noise fades out of the warmly lit space and pink-hued walls, reminiscent of an Italian trattoria. Just like Melbourne’s Lygon Street, a neighbourhood home to its Italian settlement and bustling cafe culture. The inspiration for the restaurant comes from owner Sneha Upadhya’s time in Melbourne. She seeks to bring the ease of Lygon Street, where food wasn’t the star in itself, but it was the ease of the neighbourhood where she could spend hours, sitting, eating, and talking without pretence. In its own way, in the rush of Mumbai city, Lygon St aims to be that place where one can keep coming back to, for some wine, dine, and conversation.
Bringing Sneha’s flavours, learnings, and memories, Lygon St mirrors the philosophy of unfussy Italian comfort food, non-negotiable decadent desserts, and ease of conversation. And quite literally so, as her wall is stacked with a collection of wine bottles bought directly from her previous venture.
Italian comfort dining

Here, the palate leans into classic Italian flavours, familiar yet balanced. You wouldn’t find experimental or fusion pastas, but Italian flavours that are all about minimal yet fresh ingredients. Sneha’s focus? Food that does’t take away from conversations, comforting and rich in flavours of quality ingredients. Just like the antipasti, Gamberi Piccante, a sizzle of juicy prawns in chill butter, garlic and lemon zest, a Melbourne speciality. Furthermore, they stack a proud collection of wine, both Italian and Australian, which pairs well with each of their dishes. You can ask them for recommendations too!

A classic pairing with the wine is a cheese platter featuring Melbourne’s darling cheddar, goat cheese, and Gouda, with fruits and honey on the side. As talks and meals linger into the evening, the main course features a collection of classic Italian woodfire pizza, pasta, and more. A star amongst the pasta dishes is the gnocchi, hand-rolled potato dough boiled al dente, and served with a refreshing tomato sauce, drizzled with basil oil and balsamic vinegar. The whipped ricotta cheese on top adds to that tangy yet cleansing aftertaste. However, their signature dish is a Melbourne Italian favourite, Chicken parma, and they have a vegetarian variant too!

The brief escape into the light jazz music and fluttering candle is complemented by a perfect order of Tiramisu. An enormous serving of creamy whipped mascarpone cheese with rich coffee-soaked handmade ladyfingers that rounds off the meal effortlessly. By the end of the night, you are full in the stomach and warm at heart. And at Lygon St, it is all about having a meal that is not loud but simple, comforting, and feels like a respite.
